Welcome to Female Fighter

This is a blog I am setting up as part of a project for my Graphic Design course.

The aim of this course is to come up with an internet based solution for a magazine concept I previously came up with for the first part of this course.

My concept is 'Female Fighter'; a fightsports magazine aimed primarily at women. I chose this theme as the subject is one that am heavily interested in, and as far as I am concerned there is a big gap in the market for this. The popularity of women fighters is growing worldwide; although (perhaps understandably) there are many who do not support it, or will 'entertain' the idea but not take it seriously.

My goal is to design a platform that promotes women in the fight scene seriously and offers fans of the sport the chance to learn and gather information. I hope this is what I manage to achieve!

Well lets hope the 'Unified Rules' review coming up doesn't get to bogged down with mindless nay sayer's who seem to think Women are to fragile to fight.

Think they are mainly due to look @ sactioning rules for Female bouts & Title bouts with reguard to length & number of rounds & making them both less than their male counterparts. This is a good link about this issue.

http://mmajunkie.com/news/13159/ask-the-doc-should-rounds-be-extended-to-five-minutes-for-female-mma-fights.mma

The main beef is that they (The American Athletic's Asociation, which santion's fights) would like less & shorter rounds.

Valkyrie has 2 x 3min rounds & for submission fighters this just isn't enough time, what with being in a ring not a cage so there is lots of restart's.

Jewel is basically "Zombie Smackgirl" due to losing sponsership due to the name which turned serious brands off. It's rules are basically amatuer @ best & it is more of a show than a sport. The athlete's involved are mainly proffesional MMA fighters but its so hard to make money in Female MMA that it's that or work for a living & give up fighting fulltime.

Deep is just not getting off the ground with the women's MMA. In the US XC-Elite is just about dead & WEC has moved itself to a Sunday show slot which doesn't help as fighting on the sabath is making it even harder to get excepted by the american public. This makes Female MMA making the jump to this event very unlikely in the current worldwide economic downturn due to the risk factor.

Strikeforce have put women on the card but against my high hopes of balanced Sucess we saw 2 high profile fighters (Michelle "the karate Hottie" Waterson & Kim "Sugarfree" Couture) were both given "Cans" & the match maker should be shot as both were out of shape, couldn't make weight & really were @ real risk of injury due to the skill mismatch with Kim's fight being the worst of the two. This is what the American Public first saw on free T.V.!

The AFL have picked up a lot of contract's & could still be the promotion to send Female MMA main stream & let female fighters earn the money & praise they deserve but I'll just sit back & cross my fingers.

P.S.
Great idea for a Blog & I hope to see it really taking off :-)

Thanks for that Andy, all extra info is definately needed at this point! It's actually mostly for a design project, but who knows? See where it leads...

Oops... Made a Mistake when it came to Valkyire in Japan. It was held in a cage (I'm still hunting for a torrent of the first event to see Roxanne Modafferi's fight, If anyone has it could they PM the site)

Seems that it is being combined with the CAGE FORCE promotion & will have 4 matches on the card & hopefully this will convert long time MMA fans who were undecided as well as some more main stream fans.

The next VALKYRIE show will be Feb. 28 @ Torokazawa Civic Gym
it will be well worth the watch if you can find it online.

How Technical is the design Brief & are there marks awarded for investigating different methods or is it a storyboard & athetics project only (E.g. is it about visual/artistic merit or design methodolgy & prototyping?)

Quick video you may like to use to show your style of embeding content or refering links to content on/in other sites?

Is user evaluation or design feedback worth marks in the final evaluation & conclusion? In which case I am available if you need test subjects :-)

well its always useful (and important) to get user feedback and definately something I can use in my final presentation... otherwise its only just over a week; we don't have to actually make a working site just how it would look, what it would contain etc etc - the brief in essence is to make a good online version of the magizine I did. Cheers for all the links Andy!
